LIVINGSTON, NJ – The Mad Science Mash-up was held July 31 at Livingston Library and was part of the teen summer program, sponsored by the Friends of the Livingston Public Library. Teens first participated in hands-on experiments and then watched a liquid nitrogen exhibit.

Karen deWilde, teen librarian and organizer of the event said, “We’re letting kids try different experiments and we’re really excited about the liquid nitrogen station our sciencetellers have planned for us.”

The hands-on experiments included making a battery, an iodine clock reaction and a station for blowing up balloons with coca-cola and salt.

“The kids especially enjoyed making a battery,” said DeWilde.

At another station, Livingston resident and recent high school graduate Lena Rajan showed the teens computer applications she developed herself. One of her creations was a weather app.

Rajan said, “You can use the app on your phone. It shows the weather for today, tonight and tomorrow by taking the information off of a weather website.”

In addition, Rajan, who plans on majoring in Computer Science also said, “I worked with my friend to make an app, and now it is in the app store.”

During the second half of the program, a series of liquid nitrogen experiments including melting marshmallows, were performed with participation from the teens.

Extra Time

It was close to 70 minutes into the match and I had to go to the bathroom.  Badly.

As fans watching the World Cup know too well, bathroom breaks are a serious dilemma, especially for those who don’t have a TV in the loo.  This biological necessity is exasperated by beer, which during World Cup matches also fuels a strong propensity to throw chairs and instigate riots.
