WEST ORANGE, NJ - The West Orange Chamber of Commerce, along with Chambers of Commerce in Livingston, Millburn/Short Hills, North Essex, South Orange, and Maplewood, gathered last night for a multi-chamber networking event at the Montclair Art Museum. Members networked, enjoyed appetizers provided by New World Catering, and were wowed by guest speaker Matt Goerke, author of The Memory Switch.
Anthony Rainone, Esq., of Brach Eichler in Roseland, opened the evening. Lora S. Urbanelli, Director of the Montclair Art Museum, welcomed guests by saying the museum was about to celebrate its 100th anniversary and was excited about its upcoming Georgia O'Keefe Art Exhibit.
Goerke impressed the chamber members with his ability to instantly recall names and information, explaining how mnemonic ('of memory') devices assists in the retention of information. These tools help to translate information into a form that the human brain can process more effectively. Some mnemonic devices provided by Goerke were one or two word phrases to relate to numbers, with an emphasis on auditory reinforcement. They can also be visual of kinesthetic. Goerke described how he has created a mental 'filing system' that helps with information processing and retrieval. Our greatest hindrance to developing good memory skills, he concluded, is our own negative attitude towards our abilities.
The event was well received by members. Sponsors of the events were:
- Montclair Art Museum
- Brach Eichler LLC
- St. Barnabas Health Care System
- New World Catering
