Newark Man Sentenced to Three Years for Fatal Hit-and-Run in Verona

NEWARK, NJ - Jose Asencio of Newark was sentenced to three years in prison in Essex County Superior Court on Friday for leaving the scene of the hit-and-run accident that killed Matthew BeneduceMcGrath, 59 of Verona on June 24.   

BeneduceMcGrath was struck and killed while crossing the street at Bloomfield Avenue and Hillcrest Terrace. 

According to earlier reports, surveillance video identified a light-colored Ford van as the vehicle that struck BeneduceMcGrath. Asencio was identified as the driver of the van at the time of the collision. He was arrested and charged in July with leaving the scene of an accident causing death, a second-degree offense.

Asencio has 45 days to appeal the sentence.

MILLBURN, NJ - Peter Serruto, who just completed his senior season at Millburn High School, was selected by the Cincinnati Reds in the 22d round of the Major League Baseball Amateur Draft on Wednesday.

Serruto was the 649th pick overall.
