LIVINGSTON, NJ — With one of the worst flu seasons in recent history taking a daily toll across the nation, New Jersey Acting Health Commissioner Dr. Shereef Elnahal visited Inglemoor Rehabilitation and Care Center this week to meet residents and praise clinical staff for their success at keeping the flu at bay.

"There are best practices that Inglemoor has already implemented that I believe can be replicated successfully across the state," said Dr. Elnahal.

He praised Inglemoor's policy of mandatory flu vaccine for all employees and the 96-percent vaccination rate among residents.

"We are taking this flu season very seriously," said Dr. Elnahal. "We unfortunately had our second pediatric death in New Jersey this past week. As all of you know, populations that are particularly vulnerable are children under five, but also over the age of 65, which this facility serves."

Steve Izzo, Inglemoor's Administrator, emphasized the mandatory vaccination program, frequent hand-washing and competency testing for staff, disinfection throughout the day of hand rails and door handles and immediate isolation of symptomatic residents as some of the best practices responsible for keeping the flu epidemic under control. Only one Inglemoor long term resident and one staffer have been diagnosed with the flu so far this season.

Dr. Elnahal was nominated to be Health Commissioner by Governor Phil Murphy in early January. He is the Acting Commissioner until the legislature confirms the appointment.
