Numerous Storms Cause Dwindling Salt Supplies in Livingston

February 6, 2014 at 11:37 PM

LIVINGSTON, NJ - Due to a statewide shortage of road salt, Livingston’s supply is also extremely low. The Township is working with state and county officials in an effort to secure additional salt. However, with the shortage so widespread, there is no way of knowing when more salt will arrive.

This winter has produced more storms than usual. For that reason, Livingston is just one of the many towns and counties running low on road salt. Essex County Executive Joe DiVincenzo has indicated that the county’s rapidly diminishing salt supply means that county trucks will not be able to cover every municipality.

Currently, Livingston will still be able to salt hills, main arteries and school approaches. However, secondary roads may be slippery. Should the Township run out of salt, sand will be used. However, while sand may improve traction, it will not melt the snow or ice.

Additional precipitation and expected frigid temperatures will continue to make roads, sidewalks and other flat surfaces slippery and hazardous. All residents should exercise great care when navigating sidewalks and drive with extreme caution.

For more information, visit the Township’s website, Facebook page, or reach out with questions to ticolari@livingstonnj.org or call 973-992-5000 ext. #5522.

Letting the Jean-ie Out of the Bottle

Sometime between the end of last spring and the beginning of this fall, someone snuck into my closet and shrunk all my jeans.  I tried to convince my husband that we had a problem with the dryer, but since all of his jeans still fit, it was a hard sell.  Without thinking it through, he scoffed and suggested that maybe it wasn't the jeans – maybe it was ...
