PPEC Presents “Your Child’s Rights to Special Education”

What should you do if your suspect your child has a disability? What are your rights? Livingston Parents and Professionals for Exceptional Children is proud to host “Your Rights in Special Education”, a presentation by Denise Dimson Rekem Esq. This presentation will provide families with an introduction to their rights under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), §504 of the Vocational Rehabilitation Act and New Jersey State law. It will also provide an overview of the processes involved in evaluating and advocating for special education and related services.

PPEC has chosen this topic as the opening event for the school year because it will provide such important information to parents. PPEC President Pam Tepper says “This program is a must for all parents of children with special needs, especially those just entering the system”.

Denise Dimson Rekem, is of counsel to the firm Javerbaum Wurgaft Hicks Kahn Wikstrom & Sinins, P.C. She focuses her practice on the representation of individuals with special needs and their families in the areas of early intervention, special education, transition and adult services, residential placements and guardianships. Ms. Rekem worked for several years at Weil Gotshal & Manges before taking time off to raise her three children, one of whom is diagnosed with AD/HD, another with CAPD and the third with Speech and Language deficits. Her experience advocating for her sons led to her interest in advocacy for children with special educational needs. Ms. Rekem is a Board Member of JESPY House in South Orange, NJ. She also serves as Trustee for Aging with Autism. She is admitted to the New Jersey and New York bars as well as to the United States District Court for the District of New Jersey. How much wood wouldn’t a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck could chuck woodn’t?

Extra Time

It was close to 70 minutes into the match and I had to go to the bathroom.  Badly.

As fans watching the World Cup know too well, bathroom breaks are a serious dilemma, especially for those who don’t have a TV in the loo.  This biological necessity is exasperated by beer, which during World Cup matches also fuels a strong propensity to throw chairs and instigate riots.
