LIVINGSTON, NJ – A new dialysis facility called Fresenius Medical Care, located at 348 E. Northfield Rd., opened on June 26. Mayor Michael Rieber cut the ribbon alongside Councilman Rufino “Rudy” Fernandez, Dr. Neil Lyman, Director of Operations Maria Bury and Robert Zenenberg (pictured).
Prior to the opening ceremony, the building was open for touring and networking with surrounding facility employees, including doctors and nurses. The employees of the new facility found themselves adjusting to the new place and familiarizing themselves with their coworkers as well as those employed in neighboring facilities.
Bury said that she was excited to be heading the new facility and wanted to make sure that all felt welcomed. She and her team worked to open this new facility in order to educate the community so that many can be knowledgeable before they get to stage five, which is kidney failure, as well as to provide options for different types of dialysis for patients.
Jessica Phipps, MSW LSW (pictured) of the treatment options program east division provided information on the four dialysis options that patients can choose from to accommodate their living styles. She explained that, “everyone should know their GFR [Glomerular Filtration Rate]” which keeps track of kidney progression when going through dialysis. “Many die of hypertension, toxins or heart failure before making it into this chair,” said Phipps as she pointed to one of the new dialysis machines and chairs.
Team Leader Donna Schafer, RN said that she was also excited to be working in the new facility. Having gone through so much from working in three other facilities to being in a wheelchair and needing help she explained that she was anxious to go back and help people.
“I know what it is like to need help,” said Schafer. She told her story to the guests and explained her reasons for working at the facility and how she “truly loves” what she does. She also said that all of the employees have that same passion and that this facility will bring excitement to their lives since “these people truly become your family.”
