ROSELLE PARK, NJ - Mayor Carl Hokanson confirmed that Councilwoman-At-Large Charlene Storey submitted her letter of resignation Friday morning to be effective Jan. 7, 2016.
Mayor Hokanson had met with Storey, who is also the council president, prior to the council meeting to discuss changing the name of the “Annual Tree Lighting” to the “Annual Christmas Tree Lighting” for the borough of Roselle Park. Storey voiced her opposition to the name change during the council meeting on Thursday evening, saying she did not agree with the decision.
The mayor put the proposition up to a vote and it passed by a vote of 4-2. The council president left the meeting without remarking and returned a few minutes later to gather her belongings and left once again.
Storey submitted her letter of resignation to Hokanson on Friday at 8:30 a.m.
Hokanson said, “I am deeply sorry for the council president's decision to resign, and I did not intend to insult or question anyone's religious beliefs with the name change for our annual event.”
Storey could not be reached for comment at the writing of this article.
The Christmas tree lighting is scheduled to take place on Friday evening, Dec. 11 at the gazebo if weather is permitting. If the weather is inclement it will be held at the Casano Center.
