RWJBarnabas Health Names New President and CEO of University Hospital


WEST ORANGE, NJ — RWJBarnabas Health, headquartered in West Orange, recently welcomed John Gantner as the new president and chief executive officer of Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital (RWJUH) in New Brunswick. RWJUH offers central New Jersey residents expanded access to the highest quality medical services and a wider array of innovative therapies available at only a small number of academic medical centers nationwide.

Gantner returned to RWJBarnabas Health earlier this year as Executive Vice President and Chief Integration Officer and was responsible for the development and execution of synergies of the recent merger creating RWJBarnabas Health. He previously served as Executive Vice President and Treasurer of RWJUH, where he held various positions spanning over 14 years.

“John is an exceptional leader with over 25 years of executive leadership positions in health care finance and operations,” said Barry Ostrowsky, President and Chief Executive Officer for RWJBarnabas Health. “His significant experience within health systems and previous 14-year experience at RWJUH, along with his extensive knowledge of New Jersey, make him well suited to this dynamic and innovative role.”

Gantner joined RWJBarnabas Health after serving in the role of Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer for BayCare Health System, a $3.8 billion integrated health care delivery system of 12 hospitals in South West Florida.

Previously, he served as Executive Vice President at Meridian Health System, and also held positions at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey and with major financial services and consulting firms and was a partner with Ernst & Young.

“I am looking forward to working closely with the physicians and staff to lead our system’s nationally distinguished academic medical center to unsurpassed quality and patient outcomes,” said Gantner. 

Gantner completed his undergraduate and graduate education at Lehigh University and Lehigh University Graduate School of Business, is a member of several professional organizations, has served as a board member of several organizations, and is both a Certified Public Accountant and certified Managerial Accountant. Gantner is a resident of South Seaside Park.
