The Senior, Youth & Leisure Services (SYLS) "Shining Star" Sports League: A League for Exceptional Children, designed for children with special needs, has announced there has been a "wonderful response" to the new league and dozens of children and teens are registered for fall soccer. Enrollment will remain open for residents and non-residents through Friday, September 16 at noon.

The soccer league will run on Saturdays from September 17 to November 6.  The SYLS is also now registering for Shining Star basketball, which will begin on November 19.  The league was formed for exceptional children so that they can experience belonging to their own sports league. Socialization, learning, competition, and having fun are the goals of the league. The League's Junior Division, for ages five to nine, will meet from 9.30 a.m. to 10.30 a.m. and the Senior Division, ages 10 to 16, from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., both at Monmouth Court Community Center, rain or shine: on the soccer fields or in the gymnasium. Floor hockey and baseball/T-ball will run in the winter and spring.

To register, please visit the SYLS web site at or enroll in person at the SYLS office at the Livingston Senior and Community Center, 204 Hillside Avenue, Monday to Friday from 8.30 a.m. to 4.30 p.m.  Fee is $75 per sport.

For more information, including program qualifications, or to volunteer (no experience necessary; training will be provided to volunteers to work one-on-one with the children), please contact SYLS Adaptive Recreation Coordinator Mark Silance at (973) 535-7925 ext 267 or email
