Creative Memories will feature Art Therapy, Music Therapy and Storytelling centering on creative expression and individuality. The Creative Arts Therapies are well-suited to a memory-care community.

This unique therapy will provide emotional support through helping individuals maintain a sense of identity, relieve feelings of isolation, assist in adjusting to diagnosis and fulfill a natural need to be creative.

Studies also support that the creative arts therapies lessen both pain and anxiety.

According to the American Art Therapy Association, art therapy is used to "improve cognitive and sensory-motor functions, foster self-esteem and self-awareness, cultivate emotional resilience, promote insight, enhance social skills, reduce and resolve conflicts and distress, and advance societal and ecological change." It will also serve to enrich the lives and community at Sycamore Living.

Person-Centered Care is at the heart of Sycamore Living’s Creative Memory program. Maria Lupo, MFA, MA, ATR-BC, a Doctoral Candidate in Medical Humanities, believes the pathway to a truly Person-Centered Care approach is first and foremost honoring the individual’s journey: past, present and future. The Memory Care Team at Sycamore Living accomplishes this by learning about each resident, gathering their life story and implementing individualized programming.

Understanding both the residents and their families is at the core of all Sycamore Living signature programming.

Sycamore Living aims to empower its residents while they enjoy their past interests and activities such as gardening, art, music, and sports. It also includes discovering and sharing new experiences with staff and their families.

Families are encouraged to participate in activities and events to create a restorative, healing environment working toward maintaining strong family connections. Whether residents and their families are enjoying the arts, music, lifelong learning, gardening projects, pet therapy or reminiscing with virtual reality at Sycamore Living, their life story is at the center to bring both pleasure and meaning to their day.
