VERONA, N.J.- Verona High School junior Izzy Williams recently organized a protest at Verona Park against the nomination of Betsy Devos, President Donald Trump’s Secretary of Education nominee.

From 1:00 p.m. to 2:30 p.m., about 200 people gathered to the protest with signs saying, “No to Devos,” “Dump Devos,” and “K-12 Not for Sale” to express their dissatisfaction to President Trump’s choice for Secretary of Education.

Williams, who organized the protest, originally intended to do a walk out with her fellow classmates at her school, but her mother advised her to do something that would include everyone, not just students.

“I wanted to start the protest to ensure that every child would have the opportunities that I have had in school. I'm an AP student and involved in many school activities that rely on school funding to operate,” Williams said. “With DeVos's voucher policy, it would take away the funding that these things need. She would not be the solution to fix underperforming schools or improve good schools.”

Students were not the only ones who showed up to the protest. Parents and grandparents also joined the protest as they felt that DeVos would ruin their child’s education.

Marybeth Lannaccone, Williams’ mother, said, "I thought it was gratifying to see young people step up and act to oppose somebody who is clearly not qualified to do a job. Regardless of how the confirmation goes, all the protests across the nation, including this one, will serve to weaken her--almost neutralize her, should she be confirmed."

With her thoughts on how will this protest be effective she hope that the protest along with others across the country would convince Republican senators to vote against DeVos.

“If not, then I hope it sends the message that there are students, parents, and teachers  who adamantly oppose the institution of her policies in their public schools.”

A Royal Pain

I went to a big wedding over the weekend.  It was in England.

I like to think I was invited, but according to the Royal Guards and the Thames Valley Police I was not.  But more about that later.

You see, not too long ago I received an evite addressed to me from H&M@royalwedbot.co.uk.  Curiously, it was in my spam folder with a warning message. For an evite it was pretty ...
