West Orange Community Encouraged to "Brave the Shave" for Childhood Cancer Research

WEST ORANGE, NJ – In support of the St. Baldrick’s Foundation’s belief that it takes a community to cure childhood cancer, the Shillelagh Club of West Orange will play host to one of the volunteer-driven charity’s signature head-shaving events on Sept. 16 beginning at 3 p.m.

The St. Baldrick’s Foundation expects dozens of men, women and children to “Brave the Shave” in solidarity with kids with cancer in order to raise money for childhood cancer research.

In its 11th year hosting this event at the Shillelagh Club, the St. Baldrick’s Foundation hopes to surpass $800,000 in total donations for this annual fundraise.

Worldwide, more than 160,000 children are diagnosed with cancer each year, according to the foundation, and it remains the leading cause of death by disease among children in the United States. With only four percent of all federal cancer research funding dedicated to pediatric cancer research, St. Baldrick’s Foundation grant funds help to continue the battle against this devastating disease.

This year’s event will once again feature youth athletes, work groups, social organizations and individuals dedicated to finding a cure for childhood cancers. Food and entertainment by several local bands will accompany the fan-favorite highlights, including face painters, bagpipers and Irish step dancers.

Admission is free, but there will be a modest charge for food and beverages. One hundred percent of money collected will go toward to the St Baldrick’s Foundation.

There will also be a raffle and silent auction to raise additional funds for the charity.  Local businesses are encouraged to donate products or services for the raffle/auction.  Donations of food and beverages from local businesses would also be appreciated.

Over the last 10 years, the local event has shaved more than 500 heads and raised more than $700,000 for childhood cancer research.

There is a glaring hole in recent Game of Thrones seasons that needs to be addressed: the ability of Valyrian steel to destroy White Walkers has not been acknowledged since before Jon Snow’s death.

In fact, it hasn’t been mentioned since the Season Five finale when Jon Snow reveals this discovery to Sam Tarly. Jon has cared about little more than the war between the living and ...
