West Orange Resident to Run for Essex County District 4 Freeholder Position

ESSEX COUNTY AREA, NJ — West Orange resident Adam Kraemer recently announced his run for District Four Freeholder in the municipalities of Millburn, West-Orange, Livingston, Essex Fells, Roseland. West- Caldwell, Verona, Cedar Grove, North-Caldwell, Fairfield and Caldwell.

The following is his campaign statement:

Kraemer is a longterm resident of the county, having resided in Newark, Maplewood and now West Orange. He is married and is the father of teenage triplets. He graduated from Columbia High School in Essex County and also graduated from Colgate University and Teachers College-Columbia University, where he earned two Masters Degrees.

He taught social studies in Newark at the Newark Boy Chorus School and at Livingston High School. He has now moved to the business world and currently works in the credit department at Inteplast in Livingston. Kraemer has also been outspoken taxpayer advocate in West Orange and in Essex County.

The following is his campaign statement:

“Essex County is one of the highest-taxed jurisdictions in the state and nation. All or most of us who reside in Western Essex County have a friend or a relative who has left here for economic reasons or, more aptly, has been taxed out. I hope to try to reverse this long-standing trend.

About one-seventh of the budget for Essex County is debt repayment. It looks like the years of low-interest bonding for local government is coming to an end. Thus, we need a fiscal conservative of the Freeholder Board for the good of county and the related Essex County Utility Authority and Essex County Development Authority.

“Essex County is a place where all nine of the Freeholders, and all of five other elected county officials have been Regular Organization Democrats for well over a decade. It is time for a different viewpoint to be on the Board of Chosen Freeholders and in county government.

“Even many staunch Democrats find that they do not have a voice county government. Our Freeholder Board is diverse in terms of gender, ethnicity, race and religion and that is a good thing. However, the board is not necessarily diverse in ideology and that is problematic. By adding a compassionate Republican who values limited and good government, we can have a diversity of ideas on our nine-member board of Chosen Freeholders.

“I respect the incumbent Freeholder Leonard Luciano as a good man with good intentions. However, he is a public employee and vice president of a public employee union, and Freeholder all at the same time: with little or no experience in the business community.

“His background and viewpoint are over-represented on the Freeholder Board and business perspective and background and limited government viewpoint are not really represented on the board. My decades of working in the for-profit world in credit and collections will bring a different and needed point of view to the Freeholder Board.

“Essex County has a large roll in public safety, which is the primary function of government. I want to make sure our Sheriffs Office, Correction Department, and Prosecutors office have the resources need to keep us safe while being smart about how our taxes are spent on public safety.

“We also have some very dangerous county roads. The county needs to improve safety on the many-lane miles of road that it operates by improved traffic-safety design and enforcement of the traffic laws. This will also help pedestrian safety.

“I want to help make this occur by better coordination between the municipal and county lawn enforcement entities as well as better coordination between the municipal and county departments of public works.

“Essex County has recently renamed the Welfare Department as the Department of Family Assistance and Benefits. This department provides services for approximately one in seven of the residents of the county. We should help people through this department.

“However, I want the primary goal of this department to be how to help people to help themselves so that, ultimately, caseload numbers decrease. Enabling those receiving some form of public assistance to help themselves helps both the recipients and the taxpayers at the same time.

“Essex County needs to provide good oversight of its vocational school and community college so we can provide good educational opportunities for the next generation. As a former educator, I can do that in a way to bring sound educational and fiscal policies to these schools. All of our young people should have access to a good education so they can move forward in life.

“The recent dismissal of the President of Essex County College for finical improprieties illustrates the need for better oversight from the Freeholder Board in this regard.

“Essex County has done wonderful things in recent years to our parks and recreational facilities. I want to have a roll in making sure we keep our parks in good shape at a fair cost to taxpayers.

“The Turtle Back Zoo is a great asset for the county. However, we recently bonded about $14 million to build a giraffe house. I am not convinced that was the best prioritization of taxpayer funds.

“As both Mr. Luciano and I are running unopposed in our respective primaries in June, I look forward to a vigorous debate on public policy in Essex County with Freeholder Luciano, and I respectfully ask you to vote for me, Adam Kraemer, on November 7, 2017 for Essex County Freeholder in District Four.”

Should residents of this district have any questions, they are encouraged to contact Kraemer at adampkr@aol.com

Valyrian Steel: Where is it All? Should We Still Care?
