My favorite teacher growing up in Livingston was probably my first, Miss Lyons at Burnet Hill School. She had a knack for making applesauce and letting us take naps. Is that what made her a great teacher? Naps are pretty nice. But other things also spring to mind about all great teachers: Love of learning; desire to make a difference in the lives of young people; professionals who educate, advise, nurture, create, listen, and comfort.

And that’s the short list.

Gestures of thanks officially honored Livingston’s teaching staff during Teacher Appreciation Week, welcomed breaks from the No. 2 pencils and test booklets in these weeks of standardized testing. Superintendent Dr. Brad Draeger praised the district as a “lighthouse for excellence and best practice" for public schools in our nation.

Livingston’s next Superintendent will inherit a school district of distinction, one earned through the quality and dedication of the staff when Dr. Draeger retires at the end of July.

School leaders, teachers, staff, and members of the community have participated in the search for the District’s next Superintendent, beginning with surveys, and small group and community-wide forums.

“The community asked us for a strong educational leader, a collaborative decision maker, and a consensus builder who is prepared to make a commitment to the District and provide stability in leadership,” Livingston Board of Education President Ronnie Spring said in a statement of behalf of the full board.

They believe they have found that in the leading candidate, Dr. John Alfieri.

Dr. Alferi is currently the Superintendent of Schools for the Vernon Township school district in New Jersey.  On Tuesday, May 7, he informally met with members of the administration, staff and students while the Livingston BOE continues its due diligence.

Colleagues describe Dr. Alfieri as an intelligent, collaborative educational leader who manages with integrity, sets student centered priorities, and brings quality education, high rigor, and high performance wherever he goes.

Dr. Alfieri has served as Superintendent in Vernon since July 2009. Prior to his current position, Dr. Alfieri served as Superintendent of Schools in Clinton, NJ.  His other administrative positions have included Principal at Deerfield Elementary School in Millburn and Principal at Mt. Pleasant Elementary School in West Orange.
