Asthma, Allergies & You

You may wonder what allergies and asthma have in common besides making you miserable.  They actually have a lot in common because allergies and asthma often occur together.

The same substances that trigger your hay fever symptoms, such as pollen, dust mites and pet dander, may also cause asthma signs and symptoms. In some people, skin or food allergies can cause asthma symptoms. This is called allergic asthma or allergy-induced asthma.

On Monday April 29 starting at 7pm,  join a respiratory therapist from Saint Barnabas Medical Center to learn how the two are related, and the differences in symptoms of allergies and asthma,  You will also learn how to identify the triggers that cause asthma attacks, the important steps you can take to avoid those substances , when to seek treatment, and different medications used to treat asthma.

This is the second in the Library’s health and wellness series of programs in collaboration with St. Barnabas Medical Center.

The speaker is Tara Morella, BS. RRT, a respiratory care coordinator from The Respiratory Center at St Barnabas Medical Center, LIvingston.  Tara received her Associate’s Degree in Biology and Respiratory Therapy from the County College of Morris in 2002 and her Bachelor’s Degree in Biology from Montclair State University.  As a Certified Asthma Educator, she actively educates school staff, daycares, parents, hospital patients, and the community on identifying asthma.

The program is free and open to all, but registration is required either via the events calendar at www.livingstonlibrary.org or by calling 973 992 4600
