Fred Miller Presents: "Heartland Troubadours" at Livingston Library

The Livingston Public Library invites the public to the finale of our Spring Senior Happening series on Friday, June 21st when Fred Miller presents his Lecture-in-Song, “Heartland Troubadours”. Mr. Miller returns to the Senior Happening having performed many of his shows here previously, including “Cantare: The Italian Presence In American Popular Song” this past October. The program will feature a lecture-in-song about two small town American boys who conquered the sophisticated heights of Broadway & Tin Pan Alley: Hoagy Carmichael and Meredith Willson. According to Mr. Miller, “Carmichael & Willson made a point of injecting their own rural American backgrounds into their work, producing some of the most charming popular entertainment of their respective eras. Gifted New Yorkers like Rodgers & Hammerstein could only imagine what a musical about flyover country might be. Carmichael & Willson lived it, and their delightfully unique contribution to American song shows it”.

The Senior Happening is a monthly series that allows attendees (“Seniors” or otherwise) to socialize during the first part of the program (12 until 12:45 pm) by bringing a bag lunch, while enjoying desserts and coffee served by the Friends of the Library volunteers. The program and entertainment then begins at 1 pm.

Registration is required and may be done in person at the library; by telephone at (973) 992-4600; or online at www.livingstonlibrary.org. Livingston residents may register starting June 3rd and other Essex County residents may register starting June 14th.

Senior Happening is made possible in part by funds from the New Jersey State Council on the Arts/Department of State, a partner agency of the National Endowment for the Arts, and administered by the Essex County Division of Cultural and Historic Affairs.
