Livingston Library presents “An Evening with Edgar Allan Poe”

The Livingston Public Library will feature “An Evening with Edgar Allan Poe” on Wednesday, October 14th at 7pm, performed by Helen McKenna-Uff. Edgar Allen Poe invented the detective story, mastered the horror genre with “Ligeia” and “Tell-Tale Heart”, and honed his reputation as a literary critic. Moving to New York in 1844, he published “The Raven” there in 1845.

For the performance, “Edgar” will share his achievements, performing from memory some of his greatest hits. Will it be “The Raven”, “The Bells” or “Annabel Lee”? How about “Cask of Amontillado”, “The Black Cat” or “Tell-Tale Hart”? He enjoys when the audience asks questions. He is surprised at how many questions are about himself rather than his works. And he’s even more surprised that he is often misunderstood, and so relishes the opportunity to set the record straight.

As an actress and playwright, Helen McKenna has performed as Edgar Poe and Poe’s one-time fiancée, Helen Whitman. First “Poe-sessed” in high school when, for an acting class, she memorized “The Raven,” she fell in love with Poe’s poetry and eventually added Poe stories to her repertoire. Her first appearance as Edgar was at the Ritz Theater, in Oaklyn, New Jersey, 1999.  McKenna has performed as Poe on stage, radio and television. McKenna received her undergraduate degree in Theater Arts and a Master’s in Literature, both at Rutgers University. Until recently, she worked at the Edgar Allan Poe National Historic Site in Philadelphia.

The program is free and open to all. For more information, please call (973) 992-4600 or visit www.livingstonlibrary.org.
