Taking Control of Your Retirement

As part of the It's Your Business series, the Livingston Public Library is partnering with the Taylor Financial Group to offer a couple of free financial workshops to educate and empower women to take control of their future.

The first of these takes place on May 10 at 7 pm, called “Taking Control of Your Retirement” where women will learn the principles for a successful retirement.

Achieving one’s retirement goals takes disciplined saving, spending, and investing-- all of which can feel overwhelming, especially as the retirement landscape continues to change.  In addition, women face many challenges when it comes to retirement planning, especially compared to men.

Women live longer than men and need to ensure that they don’t outlive their money. Life expectancy of women is higher than men. In fact, on average, women live 5 years longer than men.  With rising health care costs, women can find themselves spending more money on health care in retirement than they planned for.

Women earn less than men. On average, women make less than men. In fact, in 2016 women earned only 80% of what men earned.  This means they could have less Social Security, less saved, and less to work with in retirement.

Women are more likely to be caregivers - to children and parents. Women are more likely to be caregivers and quit their jobs to take care of young children, as well as elderly parents. Many women find themselves turning down promotions, decreasing hours, and retiring early, not because they want to but because they have to.

Women are more likely to work part-time. Working part-time means lower earnings and lower savings and can also impact a woman’s eligibility to participate in certain employer-sponsored plans, like a 401(k).

Debra Taylor,  CPA/PFS, JD, CDFA, Founder and principal of Taylor Financial Group, who  has a keen understanding of women’s unique needs and a passion for educating and empowering women to take control of their future will lead the workshop.

Says Debra, “In a nutshell, women need to start preparing for retirement at an early age because they have a lot more to consider.  That’s why we believe it’s so important for women to be educated and empowered to take control of their future, so that they can live life to the fullest with financial confidence.”

The workshop is open to all, no registration needed.

The casual and interaction presentation will be followed by a Q & A session.

There will be no sales or product discussions.

A Royal Pain

I went to a big wedding over the weekend.  It was in England.

I like to think I was invited, but according to the Royal Guards and the Thames Valley Police I was not.  But more about that later.

You see, not too long ago I received an evite addressed to me from H&M@royalwedbot.co.uk.  Curiously, it was in my spam folder with a warning message. For an evite it was pretty ...
