LIVINGSTON, NJ — Livingston High School (LHS) students recently had the opportunity to participate in a school-wide “Zero Waste Challenge” to see who generated the least amount of trash in one school week.
The event was organized and executed by members of the LHS Green Team, the LHS Envirothon Team and the LHS Sustainability Science students.
Participants brought in their trash for daily weigh-ins before school, during lunch or after school, and each contestant weighed in and logged their trash daily. The trash was then separated into compostable, recyclable and landfill materials.
Grade-level winners included LHS sophomore Bryce Kirkland, junior Penelope Day and senior Tori Hostetler. (There were no ninth grade participants.) Samantha Aaron was the winner in the staff competition.
