LIVINGSTON, NJ — One week after addressing rumors that were being spread within the Livingston community about the public school district’s plans for reopening in the fall, Superintendent of Schools Dr. Matthew Block released a second public statement on the subject in order to provide an update prior to Wednesday night’s Livingston Board of Education (LBOE) meeting.
Following Wednesday’s meeting—during which Block plans to outline the district’s process so far and highlight the resources being used to address any issues the district has encountered—Livingston Public Schools (LPS) plans to distribute a letter to all LPS staff and families outlining the district’s most current thinking about the reopening of schools as well as a survey requesting public feedback on this thinking and input on the planning process.
“Speaking with various community members, I know that there are many thoughts and beliefs on how to best reopen schools,” said Block. “There is no doubt this needs to be a thoughtful and careful decision, as it deals with the health and safety of our community. We want to understand the facts, the logistics and the science, and to react and plan accordingly.
“Every day, we are having deep conversations in our reopening committees, hearing from experts, connecting with other districts, having countless internal meetings and reviewing a significant amount of related literature. We are learning and moving forward.”
Block added that LPS “continues to be dedicated to implementing the best solution possible” for the Livingston community and that gathering public input will make the district’s reopening plan “that much stronger.”
In addition to being faced with what he described as “the daunting task of doing something that’s never been done before,” Block said the district is also “grappling with the challenges of navigating through the myriad of recommendations and guidelines from multiple authorities and experts.”
The superintendent also communicated that LPS administrators have been extremely busy over the last few weeks combing through “the issues and complexities presented by the state’s mandate that [all New Jersey schools] reopen in the current environment.”
“Although we still have a long road of planning ahead of us, we will regularly share information on our planning process and our thoughts on reopening, and will work to gather additional information from you, our community, about the coming school year,” he said.
Due to the pandemic, the LBOE continues to hold all meetings in a webinar format, during which participants will have the ability to ask questions and make comments. Any questions/comments sent to this address will be read during the public comment portion of the meeting.
