LIVINGSTON, NJ — Eileen Larney, a member of the Livingston Elks Lodge, recently donated two Auto External Defibrillators (AED) to Livingston's Senior, Youth & Leisure Services (SYLS), which enthusiastically accepted the contribution last week with the support of members from the Livingston Township Council.

As SYLS Director Jennifer Walker expressed her gratitude for the donation, she said, “Although we hope we never have to use them, it puts our minds at ease knowing they are there.”

Ron Barbella, Supervisor of Athletics and Aquatics for SYLS, added that when Larney approached him a few months ago about a grant the Livingston Elks Lodge had available, he immediately thought of the township’s summer camps, which are located at Heritage, Mt. Pleasant and Monmouth Court schools.

Larney asked whether there was anything SYLS could use the grant for, and SYLS ultimately suggested using it for the purchase of two AEDs—specifically one that could be placed on the rear wall of Heritage Middle School.

Barbella explained that the location of this AED would benefit not only the summer camp, but also the many youth sports programs offered throughout the year as well as those using the newly renovated Pickleball and tennis courts in the event of an emergency.

“We know the school has them inside, but the fields are used so much when the school is closed,” he said.

In addition to the AED being installed at the back of Heritage Middle School, a second AED will serve as a portable one for SYLS to use on a case-by-case basis throughout the township.

"We are thrilled to have support from the Elks Club in helping keep Livingston safe at our fields and camp locations," said Corinne Olson, Supervisor of Camp, Youth and Teen Programming for SYLS.
