LIVINGSTON, NJ — Joe Cullen, a senior athlete who starts on both the football and boys basketball teams at Livingston High School, has been selected as a 2018 Mini Max High School Award winner for the State of New Jersey for his performance on the varsity football team this fall.
According to the Maxwell Football Club, players were nominated for the Mini Max Awards by their coaches throughout the 2018 season, and were evaluated based on a criteria that includes football performance, academics and community service. Cullen was one of 62 players to be selected from schools throughout the state.
Cullen, who was also named Essex County Defensive Player of the Year by "Sideline Chatter" in addition to earning First Team All-County and All-Conference honors in 2018, started at middle linebacker on defense and halfback on offense for the Lancers. He rushed for 1,032 yards and scored seven touchdowns on offense, and made 112 tackles from his linebacker spot.
“I’m honored to receive this recognition,” said Cullen, who intends to play football at the collegiate level next year. “It is a reflection of how hard our team worked and how well the team performed this season.”
Cullen also thanked Lancers head coach Robert Breschard, who was named Essex County Coach of the Year by Sideline Chatter, and the rest of the coaching staff for “preparing the team and putting the players in the best positions to succeed throughout the season.”
The Mini Max Award recipients will be honored at a dinner Sunday, Jan. 20 at St. David the King in Princeton Junction. The awards dinner is open to the public and tickets are available on the Maxwell Football Club’s website.
One player from the group of Mini Max winners will be selected as the New Jersey High School Player of the Year. The Maxwell Football Club will announce the winner during the Jan. 20 awards dinner.
The winner of the Player of the Year awards in New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Delaware will become candidates for the club’s 33rd annual Jim Henry Award as the Outstanding Player in the Region. The winner of this award will be announced as part of the club’s national awards gala to be held on March 8 in Atlantic City.
