Bryn Mawr, Lower Merion Township, PA — A woman fell from her car while it was moving and was pinned down under the vehicle at approximately 3:30 pm today while trying to exit a parking lot in Bryn Mawr, Lower Merion authorities reported.
Lower Merion Police, Fire, and EMS officials were dispatched to the parking lot when the call came in reporting "that a woman fell from her car while it was moving and that she was pinned under it."
Upon arrival, rescuers found the driver, who was not identified, out of the car, lying partially under the vehicle and next to it. She was trapped in place by the ticketing machine and yellow parking pole in the parking lot exit across from Bryn Mawr Hospital.
"She didn't appear to be hurt as bad as one may expect," an official stated when asked about her condition.
A team from the Bryn Mawr Fire Company - Station 23, Penn Wynne Fire Company - Station 21 and the Belmont Hills Fire Company - Station 22 extricated the victim using blocks, tackle, and airbags. As the airbags were filled with air they start to expand and the expansion lifted the car up allowing the Rescue team to free the woman, who appeared to be in her mid-60s.
Narberth Ambulance - Station 313 then took the driver to Lankenau Medical Center Trauma Unit.
The initial theory authorities have about what happened is that the driver pulled up to the gate, where drivers typically have to roll their window down to get a ticket, but they speculated that she may have pulled up too far. They said they believe that she then reached behind her once the window was open and this accidentally opened the car door and she likely fell out. At that point, the investigators believe the car rolled over her and veered to the left because there was no longer anyone in the driver's seat controlling the running vehicle or its steering. This movement, authorities believe, trapped the driver.
This is a developing story and TAPinto will have more details soon.
