Gladwyne, Lower Merion Township, PA — Gladwyne is opening its doors this Memorial Day and invites you to help honor those men and women who died while serving in the U.S. military.  A day of reverence and fun is planned for those that attend and if you are a kid or you are parents that have children here is a day for you.

This is Gladwyne's 29th year of honoring our fallen soldiers, and this year some new events have been added like patriotic face painting.  The famed Orpheus club of Philadelphia celebrating its 145th year and members on hand that will sing the national anthem.

The Gladwyne Fire Company in honor of their 75th anniversary will serve as the Grand Marshal for the parade.

The Gladwyne Corner Cafe is all set for welcome people at 9:00 AM to start the days' festivities.  While you mingle, the cafe will be serving hotdogs and hamburgers and other foods for your enjoyment.

If you have ever wanted to be in a parade, you are in luck as the because starting at 10:30 AM. Families will be decorating their bikes strollers and wagons at the Gladwyne elementary school lower playground.  Patriotic decorations will be supplied for free.

And for the first time, patriotic face painting for the kids will be provided again for free.  

You have a classic car and want to join the parade. You can do that too.  Classic cars are wanted and encouraged to join the show. The antique and vintage car staging area via the Righters Mill Road entrance to the Gladwyne Elementary School.  

The Timeline of Gladwyne's Memorial Day events:

9:00  AM - Gladwyne corner café will be open

10:30 AM - Family decorating for bike strollers and wagons at Gladwyne Elementary.

11:30 AM - Parade assembly begins at Gladwyne Elementary School.

12 Noon -  Parade begins marching up youngster Road and through the village.

12:45 PM - Memorial Day ceremony and block party kicks off at Gladwyne's Pharmacy, The National anthem will be sung, our POWs/MIAs will be honored and patriotic face painting for the children is available for free.

What exactly is Memorial Day?

Memorial Day is an American holiday, observed on the last Monday of May, honoring the men and women who died while serving in the U.S. military. Memorial Day 2019 occurs on Monday, May 27.

Originally known as Decoration Day, it originated in the years following the Civil War and became an official federal holiday in 1971. Many Americans observe Memorial Day by visiting cemeteries or memorials, holding family gatherings, and participating in parades. Unofficially, it marks the beginning of the summer season.
