The Lower Merion School District sent four drivers

Ardmore, Lower Merion Township, PA — The LMSD announced that four of their School Bus Drivers competed at the 43rd Annual Pennsylvania State School Bus Safety Competition held at the Mount Nittany Elementary and Middle School at the State College Area School District.  The two-day event was held in State College, PA on June 21 and 22.

The drivers participating from the Lower Merion School District were as follows:

Beth McGowan - 2nd Place - Transit Division

John Walsh - 3rd Place - Transit Division

Kimberly Bringhurst - Transit Division

Stephen Hallman - Conventional Division

Ninety-five school bus drivers from across the state competed in this year's event.  The school bus safety competition challenges each driver’s knowledge and skills with a series of events focusing on student safety, driver professionalism, and service excellence. 

The drivers began the day by testing their knowledge of state laws and safety regulations in a written exam before hitting the road to navigate their buses through a series events full of twists, turns, and obstacles.

The overall winners finished in the top two places for the private and public categories in the Conventional and Transit Divisions. These drivers will compete in the International School Bus Driver Safety Competition scheduled for July 21 in Austin, Texas.

No drivers from Lower Merion School District made it to first place spot but locally Haverford Township’s School Bus Driver Jim O'Toole placed first for his knowledge and safety testing from a public school system.

Two awards categories were created, one for public schools and one for private school bus drivers.  Here are the winning drivers:

Conventional Division

1st Place - Private:  Ruth DelVecchio, Krapf School Bus

1st Place - Public: Larry Hannon Jr.,  Centennial School District


Transit Division

1st Place - Private: Cheryl Vogelsang, On The Go Kids

1st Place  - Public: Jim O'Toole, Haverford Area School District
