Lower Merion Township, PA — This is the first of the TAPinto weekly reporting of calls and incidents handled by the Lower Merion Fire Department. The report covers the period of  March 30 through April. 5, 2019

The Fire Department’s background

The fire department is made up primarily of volunteer firefighters That are supplemented by career firefighters and the Fire Marshal's office.

The LMFD is comprised of seven volunteer fire companies — 6 of which are located in Lower Merion Township and one is located in the Borough of Narberth.  Each company or fire station has two career firefighters in the station during the day and one overnight. Part-time firefighters augment weekends. The amount of volunteers responding to calls varies by the company.

Each fire company has its own chief, but there is an overall department chief Who is also the Chief Fire Marshal.  The Fire Marshal's office consists of one full-time Chief and three full-time deputies.

Each fire company has a first response district.  For fires in that districts such as trash, vehicles and some alarm types, the district fire station or company will respond on their own.

Other fires like those in apartments, schools or universities or commercial buildings receive the help of multiple companies or stations.

Emergency medical services are provided by the volunteer medical service Corps of Narberth also known as Narberth ambulance, which is a volunteer organization that is staffed by career EMTs and paramedics and volunteers.  This fire report will not cover emergency medical services.

Notable incidents during the period:

The Gladwyne Fire Company was called to assist the Lower Merion police With the recovery of a body from the Schuylkill River.  The body ended up being That of a missing Villanova man whose car plunged into the Schuylkill River on December 5, 2018.

The Narberth fire company responded to a vehicle accident where a car in the not being on top of a fire hydrant.  Besides the cleanup of the highway, there was also a traffic light that was struck, and a PECO gas line was disrupted.
