Drivers over the age of 55 can save on their car insurance. And, what is the best news of all? It won’t involve a gecko, a woman dressed in white or a confusing online taking an alleged seven minutes.
Instead, Lower Providence Township will present the American Association for Retired Persons (AARP)’s Driver Refresher Course. By completing it, participants may be eligible for discounts with insurance companies they already carry.
On Thursday, March 6 from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., those 55 and over attend the driving instruction, intended to be a “refresher course” for four hours.
“This is a revised Smart Driver AARP course,” said a release from the township. “Learn how to refine and refresh your driving skills while receiving a small discount on your auto insurance (from most companies).”
During the course, several topics will be covered to help drivers perfect the daily skill. According to the AARP website, topics will include:
· Managing blind spots
· Lane-changing tactics
· Tips to avoid tailgating
· Proper use of new technology
· Airbag safety, anti-lock brake use
· Medication effects on operating vehicles
· Cell phone usage
· Distractions while driving
The course will be held at the Lower Providence Township Administration Building, 100 Parklane Drive, Eagleville.
Upon completion, those registered will be given a certification of completion.
“The certificate is good for three years, and is usually associated with a discount on insurance, as mandated by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT),” said the township’s release.
To receive the discount, the course must have been completed within the past 36 months. The fee for the course offered through the township is just $15 for AARP members. Those that are not members may pay $20 to attend the course.
