MADISON, NJ - Madison Mayor Bob Conley paid tribute at Monday's council meeting to Police Captain Joe Cirella, who recently died at the age of 47 after a battle with colon cancer.

“He made our lives better,” the mayor said, “in his pride and dedication during his career.”

The mayor talked about the definition of a hero, which he said was true of the officer. He said to Cirella’s wife, Amy, and three children, Caroline, Joey and Nicholas, “You deserve our love and support.”

Family members were presented with roses and the Mayor’s Award for the officer’s 26 years of service. The entire police department was present for the tribute.
