MADISON, NJ—Rodney Frelinghuysen made his semiannual appearance at Central Avenue School on Monday to teach young students about his role in government.

All four of the school’s fifth grade classes gathered Monday for the visit to ask Frelinghuysen questions about his job as a congressman.

The visit has been part of the school’s fifth grade social studies curriculum for about 15 years, and Frelinghuysen is the featured guest almost every year, according to Principal Thomas Liss.

Liss said the goal of these visits is to give students access to first-hand information on the inner workings of government from an experienced official.

“Students are more focused on it because it’s an authentic situation,” he said. “You’re getting someone who is in that role. If I had access to a senator or the president, I’d love to have them.”
