Dr. Robert Bull of Drew University Dead at 92


MADISON, NJ - Dr. Robert Jehu Bull, 92, professor emeritus of church history in the Theological School at Drew University and husband of current Drew University President Dr. Vivian A. Bull, has died.

In addition to Ms. Bull, he is survived by sons Camper and Carlson.

Bull joined Drew in 1955 as an instructor of church history and was promoted to full-professor status in 1970. He also served the university in administrative capacities, including a one-year term as acting registrar in 1963, which he undertook while continuing to teach courses.

Bull was also involved in overseas archaeological excavations, often bringing students to the Middle East for hands-on study and exploration. His most important work in the region was to serve as director of the Joint Expedition of Caesarea Maritima on the coast of Israel from 1971 to 1996.  He has served as editor and co-author of several volumes on the Ceasarea excavations.
Bull also authored more than 30 scholarly articles on topics ranging from the founders of the United Methodist Church to the world’s earliest irrigation systems in the Middle East. He held a Ph.D. and S.T.M. from Yale University; a D.Litt. and B.A. from Randolph-Macon College; and a B.D. from Duke Divinity School.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that gifts be sent to the Robert Jehu Bull Prize, which was endowed in 1996 and is awarded annually to the graduating student with the best record in church history. A memorial service has been scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 21, at 3 p.m. at the United Methodist Church in Madison. A reception will follow at Drew.
