EAST HANOVER, NJ - Hundreds of police officers stood by solelmly today to salute one of their own for the last time, as retired Roxbury Police Lt. Joseph Franklin was laid to rest.

Franklin, killed last week in a bicycling accident, was buried at the Gates of Heaven Cemetery in East Hanover following a memorial service at St. Joseph’s Church in Lincoln Park. Following the service, a long motorcade of cars and motorcycles made its way to the cemetery, where Franklin's family, close friends and fellow police officers gathered in a somber tribute.

Serving on the Roxbury police force for 25 years, Franklin was well-known and loved by both his colleagues and the community, said those who gathered to pay their final respects. He was involved in the fatal accident on the first day of the annual Police Unity Tour last week and succumbed to his injuries, on Wednesday, at Morristown Memorial Hospital.

The family requests donations be made in lieu of flowers to the Police Unity Tour.
