MADISON, NJ - The Madison Varsity Girls’ Lacrosse team came out strong in a close victory over Somerville Monday afternoon in the state tournament semifinals.

Junior Lauren Kaye and sophomore Ginny Taylor combined for three quick goals in the first five minutes to give Madison a 3-0 lead.

With the score tied 9-9 at the half, Somerville made an impressive comeback with a short-lived two point lead before ultimately falling to second-seeded Madison. The final score was 16-14, leaving Madison 13-5 for the season.

Madison’s patient offense was led by leading-scorer Kaye with seven goals, along with speedy sophomores Clare Culligan and Taylor who netted four and three goals, respectively. Leah Rutland dominated draws throughout the game. On the defensive end, junior Jula Tully excelled in goal.

“It is such an awesome feeling to make it to the championship. We have all put in so much hard work to get to this point and I am so proud of how far we have come as a team,” Rutland said of Monday’s game, “I am so excited to continue our season together and play Bernards Thursday.”

Today's win comes after a bye in the first round, and a 15-2 win over Caldwell in the second round last Thursday. This lands Madison in the championship of the NJSIAA North 2, Group 2 Tournament, where they will face one-seeded Bernards (15-5) May 24.
