MADISON, NJ -- Madison’s varsity field hockey team beat Summit High School, 4-0, in Wednesday’s quarterfinal of the North Jersey, Section 2, Group 2 tournament.
The win preserved the Dodger’s perfect season, as they move on to group semi-finals.
Backed by sophomore Kendall Codey, Summit held their ground for the first half with their strong defense, holding off several Madison scoring chance early in the match.
The Dodgers finally broke through with a goal with three minutes left until the half. Off of a penalty corner, junior Michelle Montagna slammed the ball down the middle of the circle to Tori Ellis.
Ellis, who leads The Star-Ledger’s No. 5 team in the state in goals scored, deflected the ball into the top left corner of the cage, giving Madison a 1-0 lead.
The pair connected on another goal in the second half to seal the Dodgers’ 19th win of the season.
“Madison is a very strong and skilled team,” Summit head coach Jen Schwarzenbak said. “They stop the ball well and we can learn a lot from them. We wish them the best of luck in rest of the state tournament.”
The Dodgers will host the winner of St. John Vianney and Bernards for a spot in next week’s group final.
