MORRIS TOWNSHIP, NJ – Round one playoff results are in. The Madison boys ice hockey team will battle it out with Sparta-Jefferson on Monday night at 6:30 p.m. in the Halvorsen Cup semifinal at William G. Mennen Sports Arena.

Sparta-Jefferson beat out the Kinnelon Colts 5-4 Saturday night at Mennen to clinch a spot in Monday’s game against the Dodgers.

Mike Reilly netted the Spartan’s first two goals in the opening period, with one assist from Jackson Mase.

Down 2-0 at the start of the second period, Kinnelon had time to make up for the deficit. In that vein, Colts player CJ Smith secured two goals with help from Tim Hausler and AJ Farrell.

Sandwiched between the pair of Kinnelon points was a Sparta goal, scored by CJ Leonardo off passes from Mase and Reilly.

With 30 seconds left before the game’s final period, Kinnelon’s Colby Lalonde tied it up 3-3 with a successful shot past Sparta keeper Logan Hanek, and it appeared the Colts had a chance to win it.

The Colts’ offense, however, lagged against Hanek and Spartan defense, securing only 18 shots on goal to the Spartan’s 35 by game’s end.

Mase scored another point for Sparta in the final period and assisted Leonardo in getting his team’s final point on the board. Kinnelon’s Jameson Dugan put one more in the net with less than two minutes to play, but his efforts were not enough to put the Colts in the lead.

If Madison (16-5-1) can beat the Spartans (6-11-1) on Monday, the Dodgers will go up against the winner of Tuesday’s semifinal game, Vernon (13-8-1) versus the West Morris Central Wolfpack (7-7-4), on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. to win it all in the Halvorsen Cup final.
