MADISON, NJ - The Madison Chamber of Commerce held their biannual fire extinguisher inspections on the corner of Central Avenue and Main Street on Tuesday, Oct. 16. All businesses in New Jersey are required to have their fire extinguishers checked twice a year.

Frank Iannarone, who owns Madison Pharmacy and serves on the board of the Madison Chamber of Commerce, said it was important for businesses to have their fire extinguishers inspected. They have held this event for the past six years in June and October and there is usually a good turnout, he said.

Normally, it cost $80 to $100 to have them inspected, but because of the relationship with William Yawger, the owner of Firefighters Equipment Company in Denville, Madison businesses get a good deal, Iannarone said. The extinguishers are checked to see if they are too old or need to be repaired and it only costs $10 for chamber members and $15 for non-members to have them repaired.

Yawger said every extinguisher has an original date on it and if it’s six years old it needs maintenance, but if it's 12 years old, it gets replaced.

“We can still fix them at 12 years old, but it’s not cost effective,” Yawger said.

At the event, they offer refurbished and new fire extinguishers depending on the business's needs, he said. Also, if the extinguisher needs to be repaired, the business owner will pay up front and Yawger will return the extinguisher the next day.

Firefighters Equipment Company has been in business for 53 years and serving Madison since its inception. Having all of the fire extinguishers up to code is important in a town, he said.

“Some people just won’t do it,” he said. “Honestly, it’s such a success for everyone involved.”
