MADISON, NJ - MACA, the Madison Arts & Culture Alliance and the DDC, Downtown Development Commission created an open art gallery in May with eight two-sided banners lining the sidewalks of Madison.  Together they collaborated to enhance and personalize downtown with a unique outdoor art gallery.

The banners were auctioned off at the Hartley Dodge Memorial Building on Friday evening, October 18.  Over one hundred people arrived to participate in the event, mingle with the artists, enjoy wine and cheese and listen to the music provided by guitarist, Ken Sebesky.

All sixteen banners were sold with proceeds divided between the artists, MACA and the DDC.

“I’m really pleased.  It’s such a good turnout,” said Deborah Starker, President of MACA.  This was one of the more exciting projects I've worked on,” said Starker.  The entire process was a labor of love,” she said.

Jim Burnet, Assistant Borough Administrator and Craig Erezuma of Erezuma Architects and a DDC member shared Starker’s sentiments.  Burnet and Erezuma were largely the driving force behind the program from the planning to the actual installation of the banner poles.

“This project would have never come to fruition without the DDC, MACA, the Madison Council, public works and all those who lent a hand in making it happen,” Starker said.

Maureen Byrne, candidate for Madison council, had the winning bid on the first presented banner of the evening – a depiction of Madison painted in four parts by Kris Pfeifer.

“I came here to bid and win on that blue gargoyle banner painted by Daniel Marck, and that’s just what I did,” said Leslie Lajewski, candidate for the Madison Board of Education.

“They asked me to paint the gargoyles which are seated at the top of St. Vincent’s Church in Madison.  It’s not my general style of art, but I wanted to participate in the gallery, said Daniel Marck.  “I’m pleased to know the winner had her eyes on it from the onset,” he said.

The eight participating artists for this year’s project, and the winners of their work were:

Danielle Auriemma-D`Amico - Craig Erezuma and Angelo Iossa

Kadie Dempsey - Ms. Short and Amanda Leone

Dan Fennelon - Deb Starker and Mary Schaenen

Susan Gepford - Meg Wastie and Melissa Honohan

Daniel Marck - Meg Anderson and Leslie Lajewski

Dennis McKee - Mark Kopenski, Eric Range

Kris Pfeifer- Maureen Byrne and Stephanie McCormick

Larry Ross - Jim Burnet and Carrie Thompson

Kids Banner Heart - Sue Gann

 Kids Banner Tree  -Donna Landrigan

“This public art project was so successful, and you can see it touched so many people. The investment of time and energy in arts and culture produces multiple benefits for Madison residents, the artists and arts community and the local businesses,” said Starker.

“I look forward to next year which will be even bigger and better.”
