Madison-Millburn Thanksgiving Day Game Ends This Year

MADISON, NJ – Thanksgiving Day marks an annual custom for Madison varsity football: the holiday rivalry game against Millburn High School. School officials recently announced that this Turkey Day will be the last for the 85-year tradition.

Coaches and administration from both schools took part in the decision, according to Madison athletic director Sean Dowling and Millburn athletic director Frank Bifulco.

“Ultimately, all agreed that this decision is athletically and educationally in the best interest of both schools and their student-athletes,” said the two athletic directors in the statement.

Both schools are part of the North Jersey Super Football Conference, which school officials said recommended that Madison and Millburn discontinue this game “to allow greater flexibility in scheduling competitive crossovers for both teams.”

Madison and Millburn high schools said they encourage everyone to attend this year’s game, held on Thursday, Nov. 23 at 11 a.m. in Millburn.

The final Thanksgiving-Day game will “not only celebrate the wonderful student-athletes playing in the game, but all past student-athletes and coaches that have been a part of this Thanksgiving Day series.”

Commemorative t-shirts will be available if requested in advance. Contact Frank Bifulco at with your shirt size by Wednesday, Nov. 15 to place an order.
