MADISON, NJ -- Madison Music & Arts (MMA) invites area residents to an evening of Dessert and Jazz on Saturday, February 25, 2017 at Madison High School, 170 Ridgedale Avenue.  Dessert and Jazz is MMA's signature fundraising event, featuring jazz ensembles from the Madison Junior School and Madison High School as well as individual and small group performances.  Proceeds from the popular function support arts programs in district schools.

The 27th annual event kicks off at 6:30 pm with a cabaret-style jazz club in the MHS cafeteria.  High school musicians entertain guests in the transformed space with solo and small group jazz numbers, while patrons savor delectable desserts supplied by volunteer bakers.  High school students serve up coffee, tea and the elegant confections.

Helen Raymaker, president of Madison Music & Arts, says, “This event, with dozens of parent and student volunteers, raises funds for the wonderful music and art programs here in Madison.  We are thankful for the bakers, servers, setup crew, and musicians that make this evening successful.”

After dessert, the festivities continue in the auditorium at approximately 7:45 pm with a jazz concert featuring MHS and MJS jazz ensembles.  Guests also can peruse a student art display, showcasing many of the school’s fine visual artists.

Stacy Snider, supervisor of visual and performing arts and world languages, reveals, “MMA has done so much for the arts in Madison.  Dessert and Jazz is a really ‘sweet’ tradition that helps make so many program enhancements possible.”

Leo Sabatino, Madison Junior School band director, comments, “It is the one time in the year when both the Junior School and High School Jazz bands share a stage together, which is great for the younger performers.”

Russ Batsch, director of bands at Madison High School, said the event would provide great entertainment in a relaxed setting and showcase the students' love of jazz.  He also added that it's a great opportunity for the teens to serve the adults.

MMA fundraising efforts have benefited music, art and theater programs throughout the district K-12. Recent contributions by MMA include a new music library storage system for the elementary schools, upgraded timpani at Madison Junior School; funding to establish a new technical theater elective at MHS; new Wenger posture chairs for the MJS orchestra and band rooms; a vibraphone for MJS; specialized art lighting for MHS art rooms and transportation funding for various music trips throughout the district.
