Madison Rotary Club to host 4th Annual Colombia Independence Day on July 25

The Rotary Club of Madison is pleased to announce the 4th Annual Colombia Independence Day celebration will be held at the Madison Area YMCA on Sunday, July 26 from noon until 6:00 p.m.

Members of the Fundacion Unidos por Filandia (United for Filandia Foundation) have organized their group of volunteers to assist in the event. The celebration promises to be a great family-fun day with soccer games for the adults as well as children; inflatable moonwalks, face-painting for the kids. This year promises to be the best yet with an expanded program of Colombian music, dancing, folkdancing, entertainment. Even the menu of Colombian food has been expanded to include Colombian cheeses and the favorites such as empanadas, arepas, tamales, helados, etc. No smoking or drinking is permitted at this event.

The Latino population of Madison is about 6%. Of that, Colombians represent about 4%, the second largest ethnic group in the borough. Most of Madison's Colombian segment are from the town of Filandia in the state of Quindio, an area known for its natural beauty, rural tourism and coffee production. Proceeds raised from this event will benefit the reconstruction and expansion of a children's rehabilitation center in Filandia.
