MADISON, NJ  - The Central Avenue School in Madison held 'Salute Your Safety Valentine' themed Walk to School Day events for Valentine’s Day today, Friday February 14.
The themed Walk to School Day had students hand out Valentine’s cards and treats to their crossing guards. 
 
“The ‘Salute Your Safety Valentine’ themed Walk to School Day events are a fun and positive way for students to thank their crossing guards for helping them cross the street safely to school. These events are also a great way for TransOptions to bring awareness to the importance of crossing guards and walking to school all year round as it reduces emissions and is a way to get the youth to engage in an active lifestyle,” said TransOptions Safe Routes to School Coordinator, Lisa Leone.

NJ Safe Routes to School (SRTS) is a statewide initiative to enable and encourage students to safely walk and bicycle to school. Overall, Walk to School Day events raise awareness of the need to create safer routes for walking and bicycling draw attention to issues such as increasing physical activity among children, pedestrian safety, traffic congestion and concern for the environment. The events build connections between families, schools and the broader community.

 “We want to encourage students to walk to school and to do it safely by utilizing sidewalks, crosswalks and their crossing guards, and one of the easiest ways to bring awareness to walking safely is to hold events like this,” said TransOptions President, Dan Callas.
 
Other school districts that held a Valentine’s Walk to School event in northwestern New Jersey included New Providence- Salt Brook Elementary and New Providence Middle School. Berkeley Heights- William Woodruff Elementary, Mountain Park Elementary, Thomas P. Hughes Elementary and Columbia Middle School. Chatham- Milton Avenue School. Millburn- Glenwood Elementary School, South Mountain Elementary School, Wyoming Elementary School. Ogdensburg- Ogdensburg Borough School District.
