MORRISTOWN, NJ - Local Madison resident Ali McMahon joined about 200 women at Homeless Solution's Annual Women's Day Event.  The event, is one of the biggest fundraising events for Homeless Solutions Inc. Women from Morris and Somerset Counties came together at Hamilton Farm Golf Club on October 21st, for a day filled with health and wellness activities, and socializing, while raising funds in support of childcare for homeless families.

One year of childcare in Morris County can cost the same as one year’s tuition at Rutgers University, according to Homeless Solutions. Yes, the cost of a full year’s college tuition can be the same as the cost to ensure your child is cared for while you are at work, they stated.

Imagine being in need of childcare in order to maintain employment all while living in a homeless shelter, already struggling to make ends meet. This is the case for many parents in the family programs at Homeless Solutions Inc– an organization that offers shelter, services, and supportive housing to the homeless in Morris County. HSI has given countless homeless people a second chance, particularly families. During their time in the program, they repair their credit, save money, learn to budget, and attend life skills workshops. Many parents entering the program are employed, which means childcare is essential for them to maintain their jobs and graduate the program.

Due to cuts in government funding, HSI can no longer help their program participants with childcare. The organization relies on donations and grants to fill in the gaps.

“What makes me passionate about supporting this event is what drives me in my day to day life – family,” Morristown resident Sarah Jacobs shared. “Not only do the parents need the support so they can work, but the kids as well. In a time of uncertainty and transition, childcare can often be one of the most stabilizing pieces of a child’s life.”
