Madison YMCA Mariners Dive Into the New Year at the Winter Splash Meet


MADISON, NJ - The Madison YMCA Mariner swim team started 2017 with a bang as over 60 swimmers participated in the season-opening Winter Splash January 6-8 at the Raritan Bay YMCA in Perth Amboy. Leading the way with first-place finishes were 15 year-old Emma Danzo in the 15-18 400 individual medley (“IM”) and 14 year-old Anya D’Costa in the 13-14 100 freestyle.

D’Costa also placed fifth in the 50 free. In the 10& Under age group, Ryan Sprague placed second in the 50 freestyle, and 6th in both the 200 freestyle and 100 IM.

Other top-ten finishers from the girls’ team were Isabella Guarino, with an 8th place in the 11-12 Age Group 100 breaststroke, Sadie Clarke with a 10th place in the 10 & Under breaststroke, and Lexi Watson with a 5th place in the 10 & Under 50 butterfly. From the boys’ team, four Mariners had multiple top-ten finishes. In the 11-12 Age Group, Kyle Beebe took 5th in the 100 butterfly, 6th in the 50 freestyle and 7th in the 200 free, while Atticus Chang placed 6th in the 100 IM, 9th in the 50 backstroke and 10th in the 200 butterfly. In the 10 & Under Age Group, Francis Jaso took second in the 200 IM, 3rd in the 50 freestyle, 4th in the 200 freestyle, 5th in the 100 freestyle and 9th in the 50 butterfly. and 50 back, third in 100 IM and fourth in the 100 free and 100 back.

Terry Luongo was 9th in the 13-14 100 freestyle and 10th in the 50 freestyle. In addition, in the 10 & Under Age group Christopher Martin was 5th in the 50 butterfly, and Owen Smith took 5th in the 50 breaststroke. Colin Faraher placed 8th in the 50 butterfly in the 11-12 Age Group.

And sixteen year-old Brendan Fowler posted an impressive time drop to take 10th in the 15-18 400 IM.
