Madison YMCA Mariners Girls 10-unders Lead the Way at YMCA Silver Championships


The Madison YMCA Mariners swim team dove into competition at the N.J. YMCA Silver Championships hosted by the Lakeland Hills YMCA Swim Team at the Gloucester County Institute of Technology in Sewell, NJ on February 18-19.

The Girls 10 and under team had an outstanding meet, finishing 3rd out of 22 teams representing YMCA’s from all over the state of NJ.  The 9-10 girls scored 219 points over the course of the 2-day meet, led with individual results by Jule Schaefer (50 points including a 1st place in the 200 IM), Mary Gillen (46 points, 3 top 5 finishes), Katelyn Hoffelder (28 points, 3 top 10 finishes) and Elena Latorre (15 points, 1 top 10 finish).  The 9-10 relay teams also delivered once again placing 1st in the 200 Medley (40 points, Latorre, Schaefer, Gillen, Hoffelder) and 2nd in the 200 Free (34 points, Molly Newman, Schaefer, Gillen, Hoffelder).

Jule Schaefer’s 50 individual points was enough to tie for 6th overall in the 9-10 girl’s division, Mary Gillen’s 46 points placed 9th overall for 9-10 girls.

Other great races were turned in by Fiona Beacom (3rd place 11-12 50 Breast, 9th 11-12 100 Breast), Emma Danzo (4th 15-18 400 IM, 7th 15-18 500 Free), Terrence Luongo (4th 13-14 50 Free), Christopher Martin (4th 9-10 50 Fly), Owen Smith (5th 9-10 100 Breast, 10th 9-10 50 Breast), Anya D’Acosta (6th 13-14 100 Free), Hannah Corcoran (7th 15-18 200 Breast), and Amanda Beneventano (10th 11-12 200 Fly).

The 12 and under Mariners will be traveling to Toms River, NJ for the NJ YMCA 12/Under State Championship Meet this weekend, February 2/24-2/26.  The 13 and over team are preparing for their State Championship meet at the Kunkel Aquatic Center at Franklin & Marshall College on March 9-12 in Lancaster, PA.

At the Madison Area YMCA, all are welcome to be enriched by Y Membership and programming, regardless of the ability to pay. Generous donations to the Y’s Annual Fund make it possible for everyone in our community to experience the Y.
