MADISON, NJ — Kostidakis beat Tavlan Zafis of Warren Hills, 5-2, to win the gold medal and has been selected as the Mary Comito State Farm Madison Athlete of The Week.
“Once I took second in counties, I kind of knew I could hang with these guys,” Kostidakis said, after taking first place in the heavyweight division for the District 12 wrestling tournament.
Kostidakis, who also placed second in the county tournament, has had an interesting season due to multiple opponents forfeiting.
“I think there was one week where we had three matches and I got a forfeit in all three,” Kostidakis said. “It’s tough because I’m practicing hard, but when there is no one to compete with it’s a bit disappointing.”
However, with the help of the coaches, he’s been able to stay positive through it all.
“Coach Goodwin has really gotten my confidence up and to really believe in myself,” Kostidakis said. “The coaches really push me to go further and I’m really thankful for them.”
Kostidakis earned a first round bye in the Regional Tournament and will wrestle on Friday, February 24th at West Orange High School starting at 6:00pm.
“I’m going to just compete hard,” Kostidakis said. “The main goal is to punch the ticket to Atlantic City.”
Wrestlers who place in the top four of their weight class will be able to compete in the state tournament held in Atlantic City.
