HANOVER TOWNSHIP, NJ – What some people don’t realize is that vaporizer pens, or e-cigarettes, have become a new way for smokers—and teens—to discreetly smoke not only nicotine-based products, but also cannabis.

The Morris Area Coalition invites area parents and children to attend a 7 p.m. master class on vaping Tuesday at Memorial Junior School, 61 Highland Ave. in Whippany.

Adolescents and high school students sometimes use these devices in school to smoke marijuana and, depending on the type of vaporizer used, it can be hard to tell what substance is being used solely on smell.

Some of these marijuana-based substances, particularly those found in pre-filled cartridges, can contain chemicals that may pose future health risks such as chronic bronchitis.

Additives such as polyethylene glycol may contain ethylene oxide, classified as a carcinogen by the International Agency for Research on Cancer. Other cutting agents include propylene glycol, which is used in e-cigarette liquid, and terpenes, deemed by many as the safest additive. Some vape companies, however, buy terpenes instead of using those extracted from the actual cannabis oil, which can cause adverse effects.

This class will explore the potential health risks that vaping can cause and explore the world of e-cigarettes as we now know it.

Although vaping can come with certain consequences, a 2017 study showed that e-cigarettes—when smoked alone and not in combination with combustible cigarettes—“is associated with substantially reduced levels of measured carcinogens and toxins” as compared to tobacco-based cigarettes.

Hosted by Morris Area Coalition for Education and Positive Choices in conjunction with the Hanover Township Police Department and the Morris County Sheriff and Prosecutor’s offices with support from East Hanover Mayor Joseph Pannullo and East Hanover Chief of Police Chris Cannizzo and his entire department, as well as Florham Park Mayor Mark Taylor and the Florham Park Police Department.
