MADISON, NJ- The 17th-seeded Madison High School boys soccer team fell to 16th-seeded Mendham, 2-1, in the first round of the Morris County Tournament after Mendham’s Casey Lombardo scored on a penalty kick in overtime.

The Dodgers (3-3) had the game-tying goal come from Juan Angel in the second half. And while Madison dominated shots on goal (10-3) and saw a number of opportunities in the second half, it was Mendham that advanced to take on top-seeded Delbarton in the next round of the tournament.

“Our guys rallied back after going down early,” said Madison head coach Rich Vasquez. “They just kept their heads in it and they did their best possessing the ball.”

Mendham took a 1-0 lead on a header from Harry Burgess off a corner. The Dodgers had two strong chances at the equalizer later on but Mendham goalie Jack Journeycakemade both stops – on the initial shot and rebound.

Madison had a shot go off the crossbar on a corner in the second half. Minutes later, Angel was able to beat his defender and then saw a quality look on goal and fired for the score.

Angel and Brendom Ocampo both had free kicks in the half, with Ocampo nearly finishing on his opportunity.

Vasquez said he would work on some things with his team moving forward the rest of the season.

“Knowing how to clean up a little more, being a little bit more composed and waiting for the perfect opportunity to tackle,” the coach said.
