MADISON, NJ - Morristown Medical Center, part of Atlantic Health System, was named “Hospital of the Year” by NJBIZ during the 2013 NJBIZ Healthcare Heroes Awards’ seventh annual ceremony last week. The Atlantic Accountable Care Organization also was a finalist in the Innovator of the Year category.
“This recognition is a testament to our dedication to providing superior patient care throughout our region,” said David Shulkin, MD, president, Morristown Medical Center, vice president, Atlantic Health System. “We are honored to have received an award that recognizes Morristown Medical Center as a leader on the forefront of health care reform and innovator to more efficiently deliver high quality care.”
The Healthcare Heroes awards program honors individuals and organizations making a significant impact on the quality of healthcare in New Jersey. Finalists were selected in eleven categories: Corporate Achievement, Education Hero-Individual, Education Hero-Organization, Hospital of the Year, Innovation Hero-Individual, Innovation Hero-Organization, Nurse of the Year, Nursing Home/Assisted Living Facility of the Year, Physical Therapy Rehabilitation Center of the Year, Physician of the Year and Volunteer of the Year.
Finalists and winners were chosen by an independent panel of judges including: Dean Paranicas, Healthcare Institute of New Jersey; Pat Barnett, RN, JD, New Jersey State Nurses Association, and The Institute for Nursing; Wardell Sanders, New Jersey Association of Health Plans; Sonia Delgado, Princeton Public Affairs Agency; and Claudine M. Leone, Esq., Government Affairs Consultant.
Also this year, U.S. News & World Report ranked Morristown Medical Center as one of the top 50 hospitals in the country for cardiology, heart surgery and gynecology. A Magnet hospital for nursing excellence and a national Beacon Award winner, Morristown Medical Center has proved itself as a top destination for quality care in New Jersey and one of the best in the New York metropolitan area. The Gagnon Cardiovascular Institute at Morristown performs more than 1,000 heart surgeries annually, more than any other cardiovascular facility in the state. Morristown Medical Center is a regional trauma center and regional perinatal center to care for critical mothers and newborns.
The hospital also was ranked by physicians as the top hospital in the state for the third consecutive year and voted the No.1 hospital in New Jersey for coronary surgery; treatment of breast cancer, prostate cancer and pediatric cancer; treatment of heart failure; hip and knee repair; and strokes, by Castle Connolly Medical Ltd., one of the nation’s most respected health care research and information companies. These rankings are published in Inside Jersey magazine’s April 2013 issue. Atlantic Health System’s hospitals, which include Morristown, Overlook, and Newton Medical Centers, and Goryeb Children’s Hospital, placed in the top four in the state in nearly every category ranked by Castle Connolly.
