Madison, NJ - The Madison Education Foundation’s 14th Annual Madison 5K race takes place at Madison High School (MHS), 170 Ridgedale Ave., on Sunday, May 7th at 10:00 am. This family-friendly community event features a USA Track and Field certified 5K race/walk plus races for children of all ages.

Race Director Bob Koppenol has been involved with the MEF and the 5K for the past 12 years, the same year he opened his Madison running store, Starting Line Sports. Before that, he was running the race himself, and for the last decade he’s been working with the MEF as Race Director to actually “run” the race. In 2006, Bob worked with officials to get the race certified by the USA Track and Field transforming the event from a handful of runners on the Madison High School grounds to the streets of Madison with more than 500 registrants. Many volunteers make the day a success and, Koppenol states, “The Madison Police Department’s Lieutenant Longo has worked with us for many years in terms of closing down the roads and making sure everyone is safe – together with the Madison Ambulance Corps they help make the day a positive experience for everyone.”

Colleen Taddeo and Karen Tom, MEF trustees and 5K co-chairs praise the work Mr. Koppenol has done over the years, “Bob has been instrumental in getting the race certified and helping us make the 5K what it is today – a fun day out.  Whether you’re a serious runner, a parent walking with their child, or a team of employees competing for a personal best – this community event has something for everyone.” Taddeo believes the “important role that MEF plays in enriching the educational lives of students in the Madison community really add up to a successful and well-attended 5K every year.” During the MEF’s most recent fall and winter Grant Cycles, the Foundation awarded nearly $90,000 in academic enrichment grants across the Madison School District.
