On April 23, 2010, the team participating in the American Cancer Society's Relay For Life of Madison/Florham Park named "Los Amigos de Nico" held a Dinner and Games Fundraiser event. The team "Los Amigos de Nico" was formed by Madison residents Monica and Daniela Cleary in honor of their young neighbor Nicolas "Nico" Uribe, who has been battling Leukemia since February 2009. To date, Nico has completed about half of a three year chemotherapy treatment for the disease. Nico turned six years old the day before the fundraiser, so all the guests gathered around him to sing "Happy Birthday" and to watch him make a wish before blowing out the candles.

Area residents are encouraged to support the American Cancer Society's goal to create a world a world with less cancer and more birthdays. A birthday is a special day on the calendar for just about anybody—but it's a particularly meaningful milestone to cancer survivors and their families. All are invited to the overnight Relay for Life of Madison/Florham Park event on June 25-26th at the Madison High School to cheer Nico on as he walks with other cancer survivors around the track during the opening "Survivors' Lap".

Cancer survivors are especially invited to join Relay For Life and to celebrate their triumph over cancer by participating in the inspirational "Survivors' Lap", which is followed by a "Survivors' Dinner". Relay For Life opens as cancer survivors of all ages walk, run, or otherwise move around the track for the first lap. This emotional time sets the stage for the importance of each participant's contribution. A festive atmosphere develops as teams of 10 to15 people join the American Cancer Society's efforts to help people get well, stay well, fight back and find cures.

Highlighting the evening is the luminaria service, a candlelight vigil held at nightfall to honor survivors and to remember those lost to cancer. Luminaria candles line the track and are left burning throughout the night as a reminder to participants the importance of their involvement in the Relay For Life event.

The fourth annual Relay For Life of Madison/Florham Park will be held overnight at the Madison High School on June 25 at 4 PM. For more information about Relay For Life, call the American Cancer Society at 1-800-227-2345 or visit www.relayforlife.org/MadisonNJ  Donations to the team "Los Amigos de Nico" can be sent to the American Cancer Society, Attention: RFL Madison - Los Amigos de Nico, 7 Ridgedale Ave, Suite 103, Cedar Knolls, NJ 07927 or online.
